THE BC FILM INDUSTRY – MAGIC HOUR

“Magic Hour” is a film industry term (sometimes referred to as Magic Minute) describing the time of day at sunrise and sunset where there is a wonderful golden light.  

The British Columbia film industry has matured over the last 20 years to become the third largest in North America after Los Angeles and New York. It has grown from a total production value of $430 million in 1995 to more than $1 billion and now employs more than 30,000 people.

Bruce Laughton Q.C. and Barry Dong have been active in the film industry since the early 1990s. Mr. Dong is a Partner at Harris & Co., one of western Canada’s largest management-side employment and labour law firm and has acted for all of the major film studios. Mr. Laughton established Laughton & Company (1090-1090 Georgia St. W., Vancouver, British Columbia V6E 3V7 Phone: 604-683-6665) in 1993 a labour law firm representing trade unions and has acted on behalf of the BC Council of Film Unions since its creation in 1995.

Shawn Williamson is a producer and the Chairman of Brightlight Pictures Inc., a film and television production company based at the Bridge Studios in Burnaby BC.   He has over 100 producing credits including THE INTERVIEW, 50/50, WHITE NOISE and 50 DEAD MEN WALKING.  Our presenters will cover the following:

  • The film industry’s multi-employer bargaining structure in BC;
  • Steps taken to secure and maintain industrial stability;
  • The IIC report of Justice David Tysoe and the section 41 Report prepared by Michael Fleming;
  • Non-labour relations factors impacting the competitive position of the BC industry;
  • Developing, financing, and producing feature films and television in BC for the domestic and international marketplace; and,
  • The various different types of production in BC and the variations in union set up. Different structures (union, non-union and mixes union/non-union shows).
